In the fifth [section], the *Mātṛkā*. In the Western regions, going barefoot is considered respectful, so one must not enter a stūpa [with shoes]; in this land, wearing [footwear] is the rule of etiquette, so if one wears socks and shoes, they must also be clean. Permitting it in cold and snowy places refers to making an allowance for border countries. In the *Three Thousand [Dharmas of Demeanour]* (*Sanqian*), it first clarifies the method of circumambulation: first, showing humbleness; second, displaying a compassionate mind; third, being free from levity and restlessness; fourth, being free from defilement and foulness; fifth, being free from commotion and clamour. From 'one should also' onward, it next clarifies the application of the mind. Mindful of the Buddha's kindness means that for immeasurable kalpas, in order to deliver us, he did not begrudge body or life to seek bodhi; mindful of the Buddha's wisdom means his skillful means are inconceivable; mindful of the sūtras and precepts means the three collections of teachings developed and enlightened us; mindful of his merits means his august power and marks are peerless; mindful of his vigor means there is not even a mustard-seed's breadth of ground where he did not relinquish his body; mindful of nirvāṇa (*niyuan*) means manifesting extinction to make all sentient beings yearn for him and cultivate diligently; 'and so forth' briefly elides his descent, birth, attaining the Way, and turning the Dharma wheel. The Saṅgha is a field of merit, and the master gathers and guides (the above being the Triratna); parents give birth and nourish, and fellow students grind and polish, so one contemplates repaying them all. Being mindful of all people is benefiting others; being mindful of studying wisdom is benefiting oneself. Being mindful of weeding is producing merit. Removing shoes when it rains indicates that when the weather is clear, one may also wear them up [into the stūpa], as long as they are clean. What is contemplated as above does not go beyond the Triratna, relatives and friends, compassion, merit, wisdom, benefiting oneself, and benefiting others; this can be seen upon investigation.
