In the explanation, the first section: earlier it clarifies the disciples standing in attendance. "Without violation" means according with the teaching. From "Passing..." downward, it points out delusion. The character chuan ('passing') is pronounced in the level tone. Nowadays those of Chan and doctrinal lectures do not know the ritual rules; sitting upright, they receive the assembly's bows, destroying the lineage of the Saṃgha. Moreover, a Saṃgha of four people is of great merit in managing affairs; an individual person has weak power, and in principle there is no reason for a reverse bow. To preserve instructions and admonitions, the assembly standing is temporarily permitted. How much more so when outwardly there are no standards and inner virtue is empty; desiring only self-exaltation, would one ever reflect on future retribution? Those who surely possess lofty discernment, please listen to plain words: when facing the great assembly, you must rise in respect; if receiving the assembly's bow, it is permissible only up to three people; or if the assembly stands surrounding you, constantly recognize that it is not fitting. Since you occupy the role of an exemplar teacher, how can you remain ignorant?
