大小相敬中，初科；初《母論》，即佛垂滅囑累之詞，初令奉戒。以木叉住持中勝，故制依之。當下，次令相敬。淨法即律範。尊者，謂臘高德重，為人所尊；慧命，謂博聞強識，以慧為命，皆相美讚之辭也。

Under mutual respect between senior and junior, in the first section: first, the Vinayamātṛkā contains the words of entrustment when the Buddha was on the verge of extinction. First, he commands them to uphold the precepts. Because the prātimokṣa is supreme among [instruments of] maintenance, he institutes relying upon it. From "Should..." downward, next he commands them to respect one another. Pure Dharma is the vinaya standards. "Venerable" means high in rains-retreats and weighty in virtue, respected by others; "Wisdom-life" (āyuṣmat) means having vast learning and strong memory, taking wisdom as life—these are all terms of mutual praise.
