In the fifth [part], the first section: earlier it clarifies the limits of sitting together. From "If..." downward, next it clarifies the size of the couches and mats, which has three points: first, clarifying seats and couches. When three people sit on a sleeping couch, it refers to one of less than three cubits. A sitting couch is one and a half cubits, two feet seven inches; if it is reduced and given jointly, they cannot sit side by side. When a sleeping couch exceeds three cubits, being five feet four inches or more, there is room to spare for three people, hence it is increased to four; "descending four years" means, for example, a six-year monk being permitted to sit together with a ten-year monk. In a great assembly, they are permitted to join couches: first because couches are scarce, and second because moving them is not allowed, hence it is temporarily permitted. From "If square..." downward, next it clarifies felt rugs. Follow the measurements of the couches above. From "If scattering..." downward, finally it clarifies spreading grass. Because it has no restricted measurement, they may sit together.
