In the second, it first recounts the absence of spiritual efficacy. The merits of scriptures and images in sustaining [the Dharma] are supreme, hence they stand foremost in faith. Below, 'therefore' reveals the faults. 'Theft' is suffering loss by plunder; 'destruction' is damage by wind and fire. 'Secret smelting and casting' refers to melting images of gold, bronze, and the like to make other objects; 'burning scriptures for usage' means burning scriptures written in gold and silver ink to take them for other uses. 'Mostly falling into fault and guilt' means implicating others. Below, 'all' brings out the underlying intent. Treating them with mean contempt and slighting insult violates worldly decorum and teachings and is not the Buddha's strict command; hence it is said to 'transgress' both worldly and supramundane laws. Retributions of both the present and the future are incurred on account of images; how could subsequent fabrications not be cautious!
