Next, in building stūpas: in the first section; in the Samyuktābhidharma-hṛdaya, it first shows the name. 'Śarīra' is an erroneous abbreviation of Sanskrit, which fully is śarīra; this translates as 'body,' which is a person's relic-body, either broken relics or a whole body; hair, nails, ash, and bones are all generally called śarīra; however, the names śarīra and stūpa apply to both ordinary persons and sages; here, in explaining construction, they are mostly Buddha stūpas, but also apply to other sages. 'Those without relics are caityas,' meaning where images are enshrined; hence it explains below: 'Miào (shrine) means mào (appearance).' Below, 'stūpa or' translates and explains. 'Tǎpó' and 'tōupó' are also erroneous abbreviations; the Pronunciation and Meaning of the Scriptures says: 'Properly it is called stūpa; its meaning translates as square mound, or translates as a high and prominent place (because it towers upward), or it is called a great accumulation, or the mark of an accumulation (because it is formed by piling up objects).'
