In the sixth [part], the first section: in the *Vimaladattā-sūtra*, the beginning shows the woman asking about the karmic retributions of three matters. First, she asks about sweeping the stūpa; second, she asks about plastering, maintaining, and making offerings—the four shapes refer to square, round, half-moon, and human-figure; third, she asks about cultivating four dharmas: dhyāna refers to the concentrations of the form and formless realms, and the brahma-practices refer to the four immeasurables. The first two are the principal practices, and the latter one is an auxiliary cause. "The Buddha told..." below: the Tathāgata next answers. In answering the first question, the five blessings: the first is internal resonance, the second and third are external responses, and the fourth and fifth are future retributions—the fourth is a specific retribution, and the fifth is a general retribution. "If a person..." below answers the second question; the four shapes comprise four clauses. In the first, the phrase "If a person has faith in the Buddha" ends the sentence, marking the mental cause; "round..." below is the karmic practice, meaning that upon the stūpa grounds one uses plaster to depict objects and images, hence there are distinctions such as square and round; "that..." below explains obtaining retribution, which refers to the two retributions in subsequent births. (The texts of the remaining three clauses are all like this.) Pūrvavideha is the eastern continent of Superior Body; the people there have round faces. (In the *Abhidharmakośa*, the eastern continent is half-moon shaped, which differs from this sūtra.) Godānīya is the western continent; the people there have faces like a half-moon. Tuṣita translates here as "Contentment," the fourth heaven of the desire realm. Uttarakuru is the northern continent; the people there have square faces. Yāma translates here as "Wondrous and Good," the third heaven of the desire realm. The human face shape refers to the southern continent; human faces are broad above and narrow below. The text lacks two retributions; that [sūtra] says: subsequently born in Jambudvīpa; when life ends, born in the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven. The two sentences "that which..." below conclude the four shapes. "If a person enters dhyāna..." below answers the third question; first, it explains cultivating the cause. The four brahma-practices are benevolence, compassion, joy, and equanimity. "That..." below explains eliciting retribution. Wholesome roots are the present retribution. Meritorious retribution is the future fruit, namely the worldly fruit of humans and devas; dhyāna and brahma-practices definitely lead to birth in heaven; taking refuge and the precepts pertain to both humans and devas; nirvāṇa is the supramundane fruit.
