In the third [part], as for the Sudarśanavinaya-vibhāṣā: first it shows the condition where a mental determination is permitted. From 'Various' onward, next it discerns whether the determination method is lost or not. 'Within eight finger-breadths' means between the span and boundary of eight finger-breadths; a span and four finger-breadths is also the same. 'Having crosswise threads' means there are still a few threads connecting [the edges]. This explains the loss based on wear and tearing; below, the citation of the *Sarvāstivāda Vinaya Vibhāṣā* explains the loss based on the rupture of the edge. Both treatises are cited in full, allowing one to adopt either at will. If based on the *Karma Commentary*, it adopts only the latter explanation. The commentary says: 'Because the mark of the border is present, it constitutes the limit of maintaining [the robe]. Although torn in the middle, it is permitted to patch and mend it. If one were to lose the determination again, because the tearing was unintended, the troubles and burdens would be many. As long as one relies on the border existing, gathering the border is sufficient.' (This explains the reason for not adopting the *Sudarśanavinaya-vibhāṣā*.)
