In recounting the intent, the first [passage] explains why the lay community engages in merit. The *Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra* explains two shares of merit and wisdom: the laity cultivates the share of merit, which refers to giving; monastics cultivate the share of wisdom, which refers to learning wisdom. Entangled in the nets of dust, they are therefore called "benighted laity." "Formulating" means teaching and guiding, not prohibiting. "Guiding the ignorant and confused" is what was previously called creating causes and conditions for leaving household life and attaining the Way; or furthermore, letting them temporarily stay far away from evil destinies and be born among humans and devas, so that they are capable of being transformed. "Yet..." below next explains the monastic assembly's reception of invitations deviating from propriety. Giving extends to the four requisites, hence it is called "miscellaneous and numerous." Giving rise to disparagement harms others; foolish arrogance harms oneself; the miserable destinies means both oneself and others fall together. "Therefore..." below indicates what is currently expounded. "As separately [treated]" refers to the ten sections below.
