In the next subsection: in the verses for the deceased, the first two lines lament impermanence, and the rest show future retributions; heavens and hells are worldly retributions, while nirvāṇa is the supramundane retribution, because by cultivating good now, one will surely obtain a good retribution. Next, in the verse for the birth of a child, the first two lines take refuge on their behalf; the 'seven generations' refers to the seven Buddhas. The next four lines present a simile, meaning that taking refuge in the Buddha brings protection, just like an affectionate son. The last two lines assist relatives on the side. Regarding a new house, that text states: 'If one enters a new house to make offerings, one should say: "Giving the shelter of a house (referring to building a house and practicing giving) allows desires to be attained at will. An assembly of auspicious, worthy, and good beings dwells within and enjoys it. Clever and wise people in the world know to maintain pure precepts and brahma-practices here, cultivating merit and providing food. Because of the saṃgha's incantations and vows, the house spirits are constantly joyful, producing a good mind to protect it, and dwelling in it throughout the long night. Whether entering villages or wilderness areas, whether by day or by night, heavenly spirits constantly follow and protect." Regarding merchants, that text states: 'All directions are peaceful, and all devas auspiciously respond. Hearing this, their minds are joyful, and their desires are all fulfilled. May two-footed beings be peaceful; may four-footed beings be peaceful. When departing, may they find peace; when returning, may they also find peace. Peaceful by day and peaceful by night (meaning humans and animals, going and coming, day and night are all peaceful), may all devas constantly protect and assist. May companions always be worthy and good, and all be peaceful. May they always be healthy, worthy, good, and fine, with hands and feet free of disease. May all parts of their entire body be free from sickness and pain. If they have desires, may they attain what their minds wish upon departure.' For taking a wife, one should say: 'The woman faithfully maintains the precepts, and the husband does likewise. Due to this faithful mind, they can practice and cultivate giving. Both maintaining precepts and cultivating right view, joyfully creating merit together, all devas constantly rejoice in harmony. The retribution of this karma is like traveling without carrying provisions.' For leaving home, that text states: 'If a renunciant practices giving, one should make incantations and vows saying: "Holding a bowl, begging from house to house, meeting anger or encountering joy, catering to and guarding their intentions, renunciation and giving are difficult."' Below 'The saṃgha...', it demonstrates the regulation.
