Under "Miscellaneous Rules," in the first section: The Mahāsāṃghika first orders looking at neighboring seats. From "if" downwards, next, preparing to receive food. The "third person" refers to the two seats above. The Dharmaguptaka orders the senior monk (thera) to observe that the food is distributed evenly and does not allow partiality. It further cites a sūtra to illustrate it: the Half-Fruit Sūtra, which appears in the Saṃyukta-āgama; that text says that King Aśoka gave a hundred billion in gold, with only four billion remaining unfulfilled; the ministers reported this to the crown prince, who immediately ordered it prohibited and stopped, up to having half an āmalaka fruit in his hand; King Aśoka lamented and, holding this fruit, called an attendant to send it to the Kukkuṭārāma, instructing him to state his intention: "King Aśoka inquires after the great holy saṃgha; this is my final gift; out of pity for me, accept this offering." At that time, the senior monk ordered it ground and put into the broth, so that everyone received it universally; having done this, he then passed away.
