In the tenth part, the Mātṛkā has five segments. First, the protocol for acting as a gate teacher. Among the five, the third is what should be done; the other four should not be done. Among the four, the second does not benefit others; the other three guard against familiar disrespect. Under "Furthermore...", the protocol for causing others to respect oneself. Among the five, two are base and lowly—drawing near to the powerful and noble to run errands for them; the fourth is wrong livelihood; the remaining three all avoid suspicion. "Whispering" means speaking in a low voice and not openly. Under "Entering...", the protocol of deportment when entering among the laity. Restraining the sense faculties is because sensory objects of desire are numerous. Under "There are...", the protocol for when one should not stay long. Among the nine things, the first four look down on others; the fifth is disrespect for the Dharma; the sixth is lack of faith; the remaining three are stinginess and pettiness. "Like a market exchange" is because one hopes for repayment. Under "If entering...", the mental application for avoiding faults: it first shows the protocol. Under "As...", it reveals it through metaphors. Looking down a precipice on a high mountain is a metaphor for humble reverence and restraining the mind; the moon moving while hands stay still is a metaphor for not clinging to the six sense objects.
