In the second part, on the ritual procedure, first it teaches having the decorum complete. Below "should," is the ritual of actual reception. "One day and one night" should be placed below the threefold refuge. The text has four parts: first, stating one's name; second, taking refuge in the object; third, setting the duration—according to the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra below, the reception may be long or short and can be modified according to the person; fourth, making the vow. The Commentary says: "Regarding 'pure practice,' it is because during the intended time one observes the nine branches identically with all buddhas." (It also distinguishes this from the five precepts, because the latter do not sever proper sexual activity.) Not mentioning "Tathāgata and Perfect Awakened One" is because the five precepts first depart from heterodox conditions, so they are marked off with the orthodox; now in this repeated addition, what need is there for it?
