The third [section], "Rules for Entering a Monastery." In setting forth the intention, first the pure strictness of the monastery's location is described. The saṃgha's residence has two [purposes]: first, longing for tranquility, which is self-practice; second, bestowing instruction, which is transforming others. Residing in tranquility, it is not appropriate to be noisy; receiving instruction, one should not be arrogant. These four lines reveal the place in terms of practice. From "Moreover..." downward, the proper rituals for entering are next described. First, what should be done is explained: the upper two lines mark the excellence of the realm. The lower six lines show the reason why rules are necessary. "Ying" means ought to. "Lowering and raising [the head]" refers to ceremonial demeanor. "Treading and walking" refers to the actions performed. From "How could..." downward, what should not be done is next shown. "Dao" means to tread. "Xing" means to manifest. As for "not only...", it means there is no benefit and there is harm. "Liu" means to fall away.
