In the seventh [part], first carrying the corpse is permitted. Citing the sūtra shows the authority. That text says: "When Gautamī entered nirvāṇa, the Buddha, Ānanda, Nanda, and Rāhula carried the corpse. At the encoffining, Brahmā, Śakra, and the Four Heavenly Kings wished to do it in their stead; the Buddha did not allow any of them, in order to repay kindness. It was also like this for Śuddhodana." Po is pronounced po, and e is pronounced e; this means tilting and swaying. Next, changing one's garments is prohibited. Nowadays, people often wear colored silk kaṣāyas and regard cloth robes as mourning clothes. They also say: "Monks have no regulation for mourning garments; [they wear] only cloth that is slightly coarse." This is not having heard that the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says: "The Tathāgata wears a coarse cloth saṃghāṭī." This error has been transmitted down to the present day, and the foolishly confused do not change it. Furthermore, there are white caps, plain cords, rush shoes, and mourning staves, imitating vulgar worldly customs and giving free rein to foolish inclinations; seeing these clear passages, one must quickly repent and reform.
