In the fourth [section], first one asks another to offer encouragement. The Samantapāsādikā explains that the caregiver personally encourages them; the Mātrikā explains that mutual opposition results in an offense. 'Weighing it according to the preceding' points to the preceding and following sections. 'If...' below explains striking a sounding bowl when about to die, causing them to hear it and produce goodness. Zhiyi of Tiantai, when about to die, said to the karmadāna: 'When a person's life is about to end, hearing bells and sounding bowls enhances their right mindfulness; it should only be long and continuous, with the cessation of breath as the limit; why should one strike the sounding bowl only when the body has already turned cold?' (Nowadays people strike it only after death, which we know is of no benefit.)
