沙彌,如注兩釋。分字解義,無非自他二利,止作兩行。但初通約出家本志,後據創反俗情,以在俗作惡無慈故也。《寄歸傳》云:受十戒已,名室羅末尼羅,譯為求寂;求,即無漏智;寂,即無生理;準知沙彌,梵音訛略。別行者,行字通平去二音;若作平呼,謂此三篇,在前由途相攝之外;若作去呼,即此三篇,與前大僧本部不同;別行別行,兩釋竝通。
Śrāmaṇera: as explained in the two interpretations in the note. Analyzing the characters to explain the meaning, it is none other than the dual benefit of self and other, and the two practices of cessation and action. However, the first generally relates to the original aspiration of leaving home, while the second is based on initially turning away from worldly sentiments, because in the secular realm one does evil and lacks compassion. The Record of the Western Seas says: 'Having received the ten precepts, one is named śrāmaṇeraka, translated as seeking stillness; "seeking" is the uncontaminated wisdom; "stillness" is the principle of non-arising; by analogy we know that "śrāmaṇera" is an erroneous abbreviation in Sanskrit pronunciation.' Regarding 'separately proceeding' (bié xíng): the character xíng encompasses both the level (píng) and departing (qù) tones; if pronounced in the level tone, it means these three chapters are outside of being subsumed under the previous pathways; if pronounced in the departing tone, it means these three chapters differ from the previous primary section for fully ordained monks; 'separate proceeding' (biéxíng) or 'separate conduct' (biéhèng)—both explanations are equally admissible.
