In the fifth [heading], the first section deals with cultivating the worldly three learnings. From the beginning down to “practice within the realm” is maintaining precepts. “The view of grasping precepts”: “view” means clinging to views; exclusively maintaining precepts is called “grasping precepts”; furthermore, regarding precepts as supreme is called “grasping views”; these are two of the five sharp afflictions (dṛṣṭi), hence called “afflictions.” The lower karma of the desire realm is the human destiny; even if one attains birth in heaven, it is limited to the six desires. From “If…” onward, it clarifies cultivating meditative concentration, which refers to the four dhyānas and the four formless concentrations. Hearing much, reciting, and chanting refer to practicing wisdom. From this it can be known that in cultivating the Way, concrete practices are difficult to distinguish; unless one is a person of thorough penetration, how could they be recognized?
