In the third [part], the opening clause reveals the essential. The three contemplations above completely furnish all teachings, principles, practices, and fruits of both the Great and Lesser Vehicles; although the Dharma approaches are numerous, they do not exceed these, which is why it says "there is no other dharma." From "Above" onward, it points to what has been abbreviated; the upper two lines indicate the primary practices. Regarding "the upper two," of the above three contemplations, the first two pertain to the Lesser Vehicle and the latter one to the Great Vehicle—that is, the Great and Lesser are two distinct paths, hence it says "practiced separately." As for "explained elsewhere," if referring to this Manual itself, it denotes the "Repentance Chapter"; if referring to other writings, it refers to the Karma Commentary. From "If" onward, it next indicates the remaining practices. "Skillful means" are the rules and guidelines of cultivation; "dispelling doubts" means shattering attachments and discerning māras; "relinquishing obstacles" means directly shattering the three hindrances; the two lines from "Essential" summarize the above three matters. The "Section on Distinct Practices" refers to Chan Master Daozheng's methods of ordinary and noble practice. The above three topics generally discuss the causes of the ten realms, hence all are termed "practices": ordinary transgressions are the practices of the three evil destinies, ordinary merit is the practice of asuras, humans, and devas, and the noble path is the practice of the three vehicles leading to buddhahood. It illustrates mental practices one by one to let one recognize causes and effects: relinquishing offenses to cultivate merit, transforming from an ordinary being into a noble one, turning away from the small to aspire to the great, and proceeding toward the One Buddha Vehicle. Therefore, the Karma Commentary specifically designates the Great Vehicle as the fundamental study for leaving household life; this is just what the Prātimokṣa Sūtra says: "If there is one who, for their own sake, desires to seek the Buddha path."
