In the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], it first clarifies the marks of maintenance. Putting an end to worldly ridicule and censure refers to the formulated precepts; maintaining both formulated and inherently negative precepts equally, it says "no distinction." From "Cause" onward, it next illustrates with an analogy: the person crossing the ocean represents the bodhisattva, the rākṣasas represent the three poisons, and the floating raft represents the complete precepts. From "Again" onward, it determines the stages, first determining them according to the sūtra: one must reach the eighth bhūmi. "Immovable": the Mahāyānasaṃgraha states: "Because one cannot be moved by any mental application or effort regarding marks." Thus we know that the noble one must further be in a deep bhūmi; because the matter is extremely difficult and there is fear of inappropriate emulation, the sūtra master is even stricter than the treatise. From "Or" onward, it next reconciles with the treatise's text: "pure mind" is the first bhūmi. Asanga's treatise states: "Because through seeing the Dharma the mind is pure and free from all defilements."
