Next, in samādhi and wisdom: because lesser bodhisattvas encompass both the small and the great—the small being in terms of contemplative wisdom, the great being with respect to the resolve of their aspiration—although small and great differ, both belong to the bodhisattva vehicle, so for the moment they are generally subsumed under the great. It first shows the distinction in contemplation, as explained above. From "Dull" onward, it next compares depth and shallowness. "Dull" refers to the lesser bodhisattva, who is dull compared to the great, but sharp compared to the small; not conceptualizing form differs from the two vehicles above analyzing form. "Sharp" refers to the great bodhisattva; not conceptualizing emptiness surpasses the lesser bodhisattva. Because they contemplate consciousness-only, they abide in the Middle Way; understanding that all dharmas are nothing other than mental consciousness, consciousness is neither form nor emptiness, nor is it not form and emptiness. They do not even conceptualize consciousness, how much less do they conceptualize emptiness! If one knows consciousness-only, one abides in the true mark, because of non-conceptualization.
