Thirty-three. (The Buddha was in Rājagṛha. Devadatta instructed someone to harm the Buddha, and instructed King Ajātaśatru to kill his father; evil fame spread widely, and offerings were cut off; he then went with five persons to beg separately, so it was prohibited.) Explaining the name of the precept: It means that the persons who are able to separate form a group at the eating place; using the group to separate from others, they do not share the same flavor; if taking linguistic convenience, it should be called 'group separation'; however, according to that which is separated, it is not that it does not extend to the group; but because the offense arises from those who are able to separate, the name is uniquely displayed. Furthermore, 'able' pertains solely to the group, whereas 'that which is separated' extends to both group and distinct individuals. This is fully detailed in the Root Commentary.
