[Precept] Forty-two. (When the Buddha was at Śrāvastī, an elder prepared a meal for the Saṅgha on behalf of Upananda. Upananda arrived only when the time was about to pass, and the bhikṣus did not have enough after finishing their meal. Furthermore, a minister in Rājagṛha obtained fruit and had it distributed among the Saṅgha; afterward, having eaten, [a bhikṣu] went to another house, and the Saṅgha did not obtain the food. Due to these two conditions, it was prohibited.) The name says "sharing the benefit," which refers to those jointly receiving the invitation. Whenever one receives another's invitation, if one has cause to enter a village, one must announce it to those jointly invited, so that they know one's whereabouts. Failing to announce it constitutes an offense.
