In the first, the pārājika cluster, the Mahāsāṃghika[-vinaya] first gives a general translation in the opening line. 'Three...' and what follows explains it separately. It possesses all three meanings, manifesting the extreme of evil. First, the meaning of falling and sinking, as in the questions and answers below. The 'two kinds of Saṅgha' are the same as in the Four-Part [Vinaya] below. Falling into Avīci: The Maudgalyāyana-paripṛcchā-sūtra only shows the kalpas and does not reveal the name of the hell; in the Saṃyuktābhidharma-hṛdaya-śāstra, one falls into the blazing hot hell for one day and one night; this text clearly judges it, and together with the Daśacakra-sūtra both say Avīci, which is the Uninterrupted Hell; as the Nirvāṇa-sūtra says: with no intervals of temporary joy (because one constantly suffers pain), and with no interval of empty space (one's body being equal in size to the hell, eighty thousand yojanas), it is therefore called uninterrupted. When a wise person observes this, how could they not be terrified!
