In explaining the third, the first passage: the five kinds of replies in the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya should be followed by trainees. Not only does this keep one free from guilt, it also demonstrates great magnanimity. When ordinary fools see an offering, who is not stirred in heart? Not knowing the teachings and prohibitions, many divert it to themselves; greedy and stingy, they are no different from the base. When their evil karma accumulates deeply, in the end they will return to the miserable destinies. Seeing these holy instructions, how could one not take them to heart! In the text, 'being permitted to receive it without guilt' means that it was not deviously diverted.
