In explaining the fourth [condition]: first, an exception is made where both benefit, because it is not an initial transmission. From "If..." onward, next an exception is made for receiving texts from a junior, which extends to chanting together. Such cases are allowed because learning has an order of precedence, so receiving [instruction] from them is permitted; yet in status there is senior and junior, and there must not be reverence as to a master, so one is told to be circumspect and not violate etiquette. If, however, superior and inferior invert their proper roles, the meaning of master and disciple is overturned; if one has members of one's own community, one must not resort to others. In recent times, foolish disciples are dragged along following Confucian scholars to study secular books. When white-robed laymen sit on high seats, one may pardon their ignorance; but when bhikṣus sit in rows without the slightest blush of shame, there is no greater disgrace and insult to the Buddha's Dharma than this! Those with wisdom who hear of it ought urgently to take deep heed.
