In the third section: The Shengji ji (Record of Sacred Traces) has two fascicles and was composed by Dharma Master Lingyu. Its text only shows the form of the strips. The Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra clarifies the fabric of the robe, hence it is cited to complete it. (Nowadays there are those who instead seek fine cloth that exceeds the price of silk; letting go of the former and taking up the latter is not being adept in the teaching's intention.) As for 'the general standard', it means that among robes of nine grades, one makes them according to one's capacity; originally one must make twenty-five strips, but if one's capacity is insufficient, one reduces them step by step down to nine strips; because the Buddha only wore the upper robe of the lower grade, we know this is sufficient to serve as the standard.
