佛在彌尼樓國，度八釋子。詣瞻波國。並證增上地，唯提婆達得神足證。佛還羅閱祇。提婆教人害佛，事發，惡名流布，利養斷絕，便別眾食。為佛訶責，因即破僧。舉過設諫，而制此戒。

The Buddha was in the country of Mainila and converted eight Śākya youths. They proceeded to the country of Campā. All attained higher stages, while only Devadatta attained supernormal powers. The Buddha returned to Rājagṛha. Devadatta instructed someone to harm the Buddha; the matter came to light, his ill repute spread, and offerings were cut off, so he ate in a dissentient group. Being rebuked by the Buddha, he thereupon split the Saṃgha. Bringing up the fault, an admonition was given, and [the Buddha] laid down this precept.
