佛在舍衛。居士飯僧、施衣，跋難陀聞，語言：「施僧者多，今可施我。」居士後見長老比丘威儀具足，便即悔歎。比丘舉過，佛因制戒。

The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. A householder provided a meal for the Saṃgha and offered robes. Upananda heard of it and said to him: "Those who offer to the Saṃgha are many; now you can offer it to me." The householder later saw the elder bhikṣus endowed with dignified deportment and immediately regretted and lamented it. Bhikṣus raised his fault, and the Buddha on this occasion laid down the precept.
