佛在舍衛。六群、十七群同道行，至無住處，十七群自求住處，彼六群知求得宿處，強在中間敷臥具宿。比丘以過白佛，因制此戒。

(The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. The group-of-six and the group-of-seventeen were traveling on the same road. Arriving at a place without lodgings, the group-of-seventeen sought lodgings on their own. The group-of-six, knowing that they had sought and obtained a lodging, forcibly spread their bedding between them and lodged there. The bhikṣus reported the offense to the Buddha, who on this basis formulated this precept.)
