佛在舍衛。跋難陀以商賈為檀越，便語云：「欲得雜食。」彼商主問：「何患思此？」報言：「無患，但意欲耳。」商賈譏嫌。比丘以過白佛，便訶制戒。

(The Buddha was in Śrāvastī. Upananda had a merchant as his dānapati, and said to him: "I would like to have various foods." The merchant leader asked: "What illness makes you crave this?" He replied: "I have no illness, it is just my desire." The merchant criticized and censured him. Bhikṣus reported this fault to the Buddha, who thereupon rebuked him and formulated the precept.)
