佛在拘睒毘。闡陀欲犯戒，比丘諫言：「莫作此意，不應爾。」不從他諫，即犯諸罪。比丘以過白佛，因訶制戒。

The Buddha was in Kauśāmbī. Chanda was about to break a precept, and the bhikṣus admonished him, saying: "Do not harbor this intention; you should not act like this." He would not follow the admonitions of others, and immediately committed offenses. The bhikṣus reported the fault to the Buddha, who thereupon rebuked [him] and laid down the precept.
