The third precept: a layperson in training (śaikṣa) exhausts their poverty to practice generosity, even not begrudging their own flesh by nature. The Buddha, having pity on their impoverished distress, prohibited the bhikṣus by performing a motion-and-one-proclamation (ñattidutiya-kamma) to designate them a training household (śaikṣa-kula), protecting the five assemblies and not allowing them to receive food [there]. If a bhikṣu intentionally violates this, eating at such a training household is an offence with each swallow. If an invitation was previously extended, or if the bhikṣu is sick, or if it is placed on the ground and given to the bhikṣu, there is no offence, in order to allow them to obtain the merit of giving in some small measure. When that family becomes wealthy again, they are instructed to request the Saṃgha to revoke this formal act (karman); it is revoked by a motion-and-one-proclamation, as explained in detail in the vinaya.
