Thirty-first: a dānapati prepares a single almshouse, restricting it to offering one meal to an overnight traveler; exceeding this in accepting [meals] is an offence. The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, fascicle 16, states: 'Constructing sixteen rooms, one room per family: if one has received [meals] from all of them, one should leave for one night, after which one may return and receive [meals] one by one in turn.' According to the vinaya, if a sick person is distressed and the donor knows and understands this, exceeding the limit entails no offence.
