《僧祇律》言：「欲得五事利，當應持律：一、建立佛法；二、令正法久住；三、不欲有疑悔，請問他人；四、僧尼犯罪恐怖者，為作依怙；五、欲遊化諸方而無有礙。是為篤信持律者五利。」

The *Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya* states: "One who wishes to obtain five benefits should uphold the vinaya: first, to establish the Buddhadharma; second, to cause the true Dharma to abide long; third, to avoid having doubts and regrets and having to ask others; fourth, to serve as a refuge for monks and nuns who fear having committed an offense; fifth, to wish to travel and transform in various regions without obstruction. These are the five benefits for one who faithfully upholds the vinaya."
