《十誦律》：「諸比丘廢學毘尼，便誦讀修多羅、阿毘曇。世尊種種呵責已，讚歎毘尼。多有長老比丘，就優波離學律。」
The *Daśādhyāya-vinaya* states: "The bhikṣus neglected the study of the vinaya and recited only the sūtras and the abhidharma. After the World-Honoured One rebuked them in various ways, he praised the vinaya. Many elder bhikṣus then went to Upāli to study the vinaya."
