佛言：「有四種廣說。若比丘如是語：『諸長老！我於某村、某城親從佛聞受持，此是法、是毘尼、是佛所教。』若聞彼比丘所說，不應生嫌疑，亦不應呵。應審定文句已，應尋究修多羅、毘尼，檢校法律。若聽彼比丘所說，不與修多羅、毘尼、法律相應，違背於法，應語彼比丘：『汝所說者，非佛所說，或是長老不審得佛語。何以故？我尋究修多羅、毘尼、法律不與相應，違背於法。長老！不復須誦習，亦莫教餘比丘，今應捨棄。』若聞彼比丘所說，尋究修多羅、若毘尼，法律與共相應者，應語言：『長老所說，是佛所說，審得佛語。何以故？我尋究修多羅、毘尼、法律，與共相應而不違背。長老！應善持誦習，教餘比丘，勿令忘失。』此是初廣說。」

The Buddha said: "There are four great references. If a bhikṣu speaks thus: 'Venerable sirs! In such-and-such a village or such-and-such a city, I personally heard and received this from the Buddha; this is the Dharma, this is the vinaya, this is what the Buddha taught.' If one hears what that bhikṣu has spoken, one should not give rise to dislike or doubt, nor should one rebuke him. Having examined and settled the text, one should investigate the sūtras and the vinaya, and verify them against the Dharma and vinaya. If, upon listening to what that bhikṣu says, it is not in accord with the sūtras, the vinaya, and the Dharma and vinaya, and contradicts the Dharma, one should tell that bhikṣu: 'What you have said is not what the Buddha taught, or the venerable sir did not carefully grasp the Buddha's words. Why? When I investigate the sūtras, the vinaya, and the Dharma and vinaya, it is not in accord with them and contradicts the Dharma. Venerable sir! You must no longer recite or practice it, nor teach it to other bhikṣus; you must now cast it aside.' If, upon hearing what that bhikṣu has spoken, one investigates the sūtras or the vinaya, and the Dharma and vinaya are in accord with it, one should tell him: 'What the venerable sir has said is what the Buddha taught; you have carefully grasped the Buddha's words. Why? When I investigate the sūtras, the vinaya, and the Dharma and vinaya, it is in accord with them and does not contradict them. Venerable sir! You should properly maintain, recite, and practice it, and teach other bhikṣus, not allowing it to be forgotten.' This is the first great reference."
