《薩婆多論》云：「毘尼有四義，餘經所無：一是佛法平地，萬善由之生長；二、一切佛弟子皆依戒住，一切眾生由戒而有；三、趣涅槃之初門；四是佛法瓔珞，能莊嚴佛法。具斯四義，功強於彼。」

The *Sarvāstivāda-śāstra* says: "The vinaya has four meanings that other scriptures do not possess: first, it is the level ground of the Buddhadharma, from which myriad wholesome things arise and grow; second, all disciples of the Buddha dwell relying on śīla, and all sentient beings exist on account of śīla; third, it is the initial gate to nirvāṇa; fourth, it is the necklace of the Buddhadharma, able to adorn the Buddhadharma. Possessing these four meanings, its merits are superior to those [of the others]."
