(There are two conditions of the offense. First, explaining independent sthūlātyaya, there are three distinctions: such as causing a schism in the saṃgha of the Dharma wheel, stealing four coins, or stealing food of the saṃgha, these are called upper grade; such as causing a schism in a karman saṃgha, stealing three coins or fewer, or having mutual contact through robes, these are called middle grade; such as reviling the saṃgha with evil intent, stealing one coin, using human hair, eating raw meat and blood, going naked, or wearing the robes of non-Buddhists, these are called lower grade. Second, explaining those derived from other offenses: the Daśādhyāya-vinaya says: 'A heavy [sthūlātyaya] derived from the first section should be repented amidst the entire saṃgha; if a light one is derived from the first section, or a heavy one is derived from the second section, it should be repented amidst a community of four bhikṣus outside the boundary; if a light one is derived from a saṃghāvaśeṣa, it should be repented before one bhikṣu.' The Sarvāstivāda says: 'The method of repentance is the same as for prāyaścittika.' The repentance method for the previous independent sthūlātyaya should also be understood as following the upper, middle, and lower [grades of] derived repentance.)
