The ritual for the formal confession: (Here the various offenses, differentiated from start to finish, comprise a total of twelve categories of three offenses each. The first group of three: that is, the prāyaścittika for extra robe[s], and the two types of concealment—fundamental and subsequent. The second group of three: declaring purity when the saṃgha recites the precepts—the prāyaścittika offense and the two concealments. The third group of three: declaring oneself pure in face-to-face recitation of the precepts—the prāyaścittika offense and the two concealments. The fourth group of three: declaring purity when the saṃgha conducts pravāraṇā—the prāyaścittika offense and the two concealments. The fifth group of three: declaring oneself pure in face-to-face pravāraṇā—the prāyaścittika offense and the two concealments. The sixth group of three: reciting the precepts for the assembly when oneself possesses offenses—the duṣkṛta offense and the two concealments. The seventh group of three: not being eligible to listen to the precepts when oneself has an infraction—the duṣkṛta offense and the two concealments. The eighth group of three: false silence at the three inquiries in two places when the saṃgha recites the precepts—the duṣkṛta offense and the two concealments. The ninth group of three: declaring oneself pure in mental recitation of the precepts—the duṣkṛta offense and the two concealments. The tenth group of three: declaring oneself pure in mental pravāraṇā—the duṣkṛta offense and the two concealments. The eleventh group of three: receiving another's confession when oneself possesses offenses—the duṣkṛta offense and the two concealments. The twelfth group of three: wearing and using robes that have incurred forfeiture—the duṣkṛta offense and the two concealments. Whether these various offenses exist or not is indeterminate; at the time of confession, one must thoroughly know their presence or absence based on conditions, properly resolving them in accordance with the text. The confession is divided into three categories: first, confessing together the twenty-four offenses of concealment, namely the two duṣkṛtas of fundamental concealment and subsequent concealment beneath the root extra-robe prāyaścittika down through the twelfth, wearing and using robes that have incurred forfeiture, because these offenses are of the same kind; second, confessing together the seven categories of duṣkṛta offenses such as not being eligible to recite the precepts, likewise because these seven are of the same kind; third, confessing together the five categories of prāyaścittika offenses such as the extra robe.)
