At that time Śāriputra addressed the bhikṣus: "Venerable ones! If there is a dispute, and the bhikṣu who reproaches the other as well as the bhikṣu who committed an offense do not examine themselves, you should know that this dispute will thereupon grow even further and cannot be removed in accordance with the Dharma and the vinaya, so that the bhikṣus will not dwell in peace. If bhikṣus dispute together, and both the bhikṣu who reproaches the other and the one who committed the offense each examine their own faults, you should know that this dispute will not grow further or become severe; it will be removed in accordance with the Dharma and the vinaya, and the bhikṣus will then dwell in peace. Bhikṣus, how does one examine one's own faults? The bhikṣu who committed an offense thinks thus: 'I have committed such an act, and he saw my transgression. If I had not committed it, he could not have seen my transgression. Because I committed it, I caused him to see me. I must now confess my own fault so that he will no longer scold me with harsh words. If I do this, it will cause good dharmas to increase.' This is how a bhikṣu is able to examine his own fault. How does the bhikṣu who reproaches the other examine his own fault? He thinks thus: 'That bhikṣu committed a transgression, which caused me to see it. If he had not committed the transgression, I would not have seen it. Because he committed the transgression, it caused me to see it. If he is able to repent sincerely on his own, it will not cause me to utter harsh words. In this way it will cause good dharmas to increase.' This is how the bhikṣu who reproaches the other examines his own fault. If bhikṣus have a dispute, and both the bhikṣu who reproaches the other and the bhikṣu who committed the offense are able to examine their own faults in this way, you should know that this fault will not grow further, and in accordance with the Dharma, the vinaya, and the Buddha's teaching, the bhikṣus will dwell in peace." Śāriputra spoke thus, and having heard it, the bhikṣus rejoiced, received it with faith and delight, and upheld it.
