At that time Śāriputra addressed the monks: "Venerables! If there is a dispute, and the monk who reproves another and the monk with the offence do not observe themselves, you should know that this dispute will grow further and cannot be eliminated in accordance with the Dharma and in accordance with the vinaya, and the monks will not be at ease and peace. If monks engage in a dispute together, and the monk who reproves another and the one with the offence each observe their own faults, you should know that this dispute will not grow further and become grave; it will be eliminated in accordance with the Dharma and in accordance with the vinaya, and the monks will dwell in ease and peace. Monks, how does one observe one's own faults? The monk with the offence thinks: 'I committed such a matter; he saw my wrong violation. If I had not violated, he could not have seen my wrong violation. Because I violated, I caused him to see me; I should now confess my fault myself so that he will no longer reprove me with harsh words. If I do this, it will cause good qualities to increase.' This is a monk being able to observe his own fault. How does the monk who reproves another observe his own fault? He thinks like this: 'That monk committed a wrong violation, causing me to see it. If he had not committed a wrong violation, I would not have seen it. Because he committed a wrong violation, it caused me to see it. If he can sincerely confess by himself, it will not cause me to utter harsh words; thus good qualities will increase.' This is the monk who reproves another observing his own fault. If monks have a matter of dispute, and the monk who reproves another and the monk with the offence are able to observe their own faults like this, you should know that this fault will not grow further; in accordance with the Dharma, in accordance with the vinaya, and in accordance with the Buddha's teaching, the monks will dwell in ease and peace." Śāriputra having spoken thus, the monks heard it and joyfully received and upheld it in faith.
