At that time, Ānanda was in the Kukkuṭārāma at Pāṭaliputra. A peacock-crest brāhmaṇa came to Ānanda's place, and after greeting him, sat to one side and said to Ānanda: "For what reason did the śramaṇa Gautama lay down for the bhikṣus the higher training in morality, the higher training in pure conduct, and the higher training in the prātimokṣa?" Ānanda replied: "The reason is that to subdue lust, anger, and delusion so that they are exhausted, the World-Honoured One laid down the precepts for the bhikṣus." He asked again: "If a bhikṣu attains arhatship and the exhaustion of the āsravas, what does he train in?" Ānanda replied: "With lust, anger, and delusion exhausted, he does not commit unwholesome deeds and does not associate with evils. What had to be done has been accomplished; he is called 'one beyond training' (aśaikṣa)." The brāhmaṇa said: "As just spoken, is he then one beyond training?" Ānanda replied: "It is so." Having heard this, the peacock-crest brāhmaṇa rejoiced, received it with faith and delight, and upheld it.
