"May the venerable saṃgha listen! I, the non-Buddhist named so-and-so, take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, take refuge in the Saṃgha. I seek to go forth and practice the Path in the presence of the World-Honoured One; the World-Honoured One is indeed my Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha." (Spoken three times.) "I, the non-Buddhist named so-and-so, have taken refuge in the Buddha, taken refuge in the Dharma, taken refuge in the Saṃgha. I have gone forth to learn the Path from the Tathāgata; the Tathāgata is my Arhat, Samyaksambuddha." (Spoken three times.)
