There are five dharmas that cause the true Dharma to perish swiftly. What are the five? A bhikṣu does not receive and recite carefully, tends to forget and make errors, has incomplete text, and teaches it to other people; since the text is incomplete, its meaning is deficient. This is the first [dharma that] swiftly destroys the true Dharma. Furthermore, a bhikṣu who is an eminent person and senior elder in the saṃgha, or revered throughout a whole state, mostly does not uphold the precepts, but cultivates unwholesome dharmas, abandons moral conduct, is not diligent and energetic, and claims to have attained what he has not attained, entered what he has not entered, and realized what he has not realized. Young bhikṣus born later imitate and practice his conduct, mostly breaking the precepts as well, cultivating unwholesome dharmas, abandoning moral conduct, and failing to be diligent and energetic, [claiming] to have attained what they have not attained, entered what they have not entered, and realized what they have not realized. This is the second [dharma that] swiftly destroys the true Dharma. Furthermore, a bhikṣu of extensive learning who upholds the Dharma, upholds the Vinaya, and upholds the Mātṛkā, passes away without teaching what he has recited to other bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, and upāsikās; once he passes away, the Dharma is cut off and extinguished. This is the third [dharma that] swiftly destroys the true Dharma. Furthermore, a bhikṣu is difficult to instruct, does not accept good words, cannot practice patience, and the other good bhikṣus simply cast him aside. This is the fourth [dharma that] swiftly destroys the true Dharma. Furthermore, a bhikṣu is fond of quarrelling, verbally abusing one another, disputing back and forth with words like knives and swords, mutually searching for flaws and shortcomings. This is the fifth [dharma that] swiftly destroys the true Dharma. There are another five dharmas that make the true Dharma abide for a long time (the reverse of the above statements).
