Upholding the precepts has five merits (the opposite of the sentences above). Furthermore, there are five matters: unable to obtain things previously unobtained; unable to protect what has already been obtained; in whatever assembly one is present—whether an assembly of kṣatriyas, an assembly of brahmins, an assembly of householders, or an assembly of bhikṣus—hearing of it and having shame; within countless yojanas, śramaṇas and brahmins recount one's evils; and upon death, the precept-breaking evil person falls into evil destinies. Upholding the precepts has five merits (the opposite of the sentences above).
