Rules for the conduct of a disciple. (At that time, various disciples did not observe the rules of disciples, entering villages without informing the upādhyāyikā, and so on. The Buddha said: 'From now on, rules for disciples shall be established, requiring disciples to practice the rules of disciples toward their upādhyāyikā.' The eight rules of shared conduct are as before. Furthermore, without informing the upādhyāyikā, she must not enter a village, must not go to another's house, must not accompany or take another bhikṣuṇī as a companion, must not give, must not receive, must not assist with saṃgha affairs, must not receive another's assistance with saṃgha affairs, must not shave another's hair, must not have another shave her hair, must not enter a bathhouse, must not massage another's body, must not go to day-resting rooms, must not go to a charnel ground, must not go outside the sīmā, and must not travel to other regions. In the early morning, she should enter the upādhyāyikā's room, receive instruction in reciting sūtras and ask their meaning, remove the urinal vessel, announce that the time has come, and so forth in detail. She should greet the upādhyāyikā three times a day: morning, noon, and evening. She must undertake two duties for the upādhyāyikā without excusing herself on grounds of hardship: first, repairing the dwelling quarters; second, mending and washing robes. Whatever the upādhyāyikā instructs in accordance with the Dharma, she must fully carry out. If sent on errands to various places, she must not excuse herself by inventing pretexts; if she makes excuses, she shall be dealt with in accordance with the Dharma. From now on, rules of practice for disciples are established; if one does not practice them, she shall be dealt with in accordance with the Dharma. This conduct is to be practiced toward an ācāryikā in the same way; because the text is identical, it is not set forth again.)
