At that time the Buddha addressed the monks: "Suppose a donkey walks along with a herd of cows and says to itself: 'I too am a cow! I too am a cow!' Yet the donkey's hair does not resemble a cow's, its legs do not resemble a cow's, and its sound does not resemble a cow's; yet walking along with the cows, it says of itself that it is a cow. In this way, there is a foolish person who follows after monks who are in accordance with the Dharma, saying of himself that he is a monk. This foolish person lacks higher morality, higher mind, and higher wisdom like a good monk, yet walking along with the saṃgha, he says of himself: 'I am a monk!' Therefore, you all should diligently cultivate the training in higher morality, higher mind, and higher wisdom." The Buddha having spoken thus, the monks heard it and joyfully received and upheld it in faith.
