Fourth, the ritual for receiving the bodhisattva precepts of the Yingluo jing. First, bowing to the Three Jewels of the three periods of time (spoken three times). Next, receiving the four indestructible confidences: taking refuge in the Buddha, taking refuge in the Dharma, taking refuge in the Saṃgha, and taking refuge in the Precepts (spoken three times). Next, repenting the ten unwholesome actions, the five heinous offenses, and so forth (spoken three times). Next, explaining the ten major precepts, transgressing which causes the loss of the forty-two virtuous and noble dharmas. Asking: "Are you able to uphold them?" (Answer: "I can.") Afterwards, concluding with the three refuges, reiterating the preceding ten major precepts, praising and making vows, saying: "Those who receive the bodhisattva precepts transcend the four Māras, surpass the sufferings of the three realms, do not lose them from rebirth to rebirth, and are constantly accompanied by them until attaining Buddhahood. If one does not receive the precepts, one is not called a sentient being with consciousness, being no different from an animal; one is forever separated from the ocean of the Three Jewels, is not a bodhisattva, is a non-Buddhist of wrong views, and lacks basic human sentiment. The merit of encouraging and converting people to receive the precepts surpasses that of building eighty-four thousand jewel stupas. One who possesses precepts and transgresses is superior to one who lacks precepts and does not transgress. If one receives them before a real Buddha or bodhisattva, it is called the upper-grade precept. If after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa there is no Dharma master within a thousand li, and one receives them by self-sworn vow before an image of the Buddha or a bodhisattva, it is called the lower-grade precept."
