Eighteenth: The precept against acting as a teacher without understanding. It is instituted because forcing instruction without understanding carries the error of misleading others. The two ordained assemblies share in the transgression; it is instituted commonly for both the Mahāyāna and the Hīnayāna. The [other] three assemblies and laypersons do not have the role of being a model teacher, so it is not yet instituted [for them]. The teacher's virtue for a śrāvaka lies in the seven dharmas, instituted for reciting and receiving the vinaya. The bodhisattva's way of a teacher requires ten years and five dharmas, as explained at the beginning. The narration of matters is threefold: first, one should recite the precepts; understanding the meaning is also what is instituted. Every day in the six periods, three each during the day and night. One says: while one's recitation is not yet fluent, it must be in the six periods; once it is fluent, it is not necessarily always so. A second says: it should always be in the six periods. Second, explaining that without reciting and without understanding, one should not act as a teacher. First, going against one's own mind deceives oneself; misleading the person before one deceives others.
